Stimulus Dollars For Our Region
Saint John, New Brunswick, August 23, 2010: Today, the Governments of Canada and New Brunswick announced an investment in four infrastructure projects that will create maintain local jobs, improve and enhance the safety of local roads and drinking water, and build a stronger future for the City of Saint John.
The $4.5 million announcement was made by Rodney Weston, Member of Parliament for Saint John, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and the Honourable Jack Keir, Minister of Energy, Minister responsible for New Brunswick Energy Efficiency and Conservation Agency and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Fundy-River Valley.
“Canada’s Economic Action Plan continues to lay the groundwork for a future of economic strength and security in the Province of New Brunswick and across Canada,” said MP Weston, “These investments to improve Saint John’s water and highway infrastructure, which are crucial to ensuring healthy, strong communities,—will have a real and lasting impact on the city and its residents.”
“These upgrades and improvements will ensure the people of Saint John and New Brunswick have safe roads and good, reliable drinking water systems, said Minister Keir, on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.
"Thanks to the support of the governments of Canada and New Brunswick, the City of Saint John will be able to make these much-needed improvements," said His Worship Mayor Ivan Court. "Common Council has made a commitment to safe, clean drinking water and to improved roads. These projects are important steps to meeting our goals."
This investment will support pavement rehabilitation on several sections of highway across Saint John as well as improvements to water infrastructure at the Cottage Hill Water Storage Reservoir and Rockwood Water Storage Reservoir and Spruce Lake Industrial Park.
The total eligible costs for all four projects are estimated at $6.39 million, with $1.5 million for improvements to drinking water and $4.89 million for pavement rehabilitation.
Federal investments for these projects come from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The federal and provincial governments will jointly fund up to $4.64 million for estimated eligible project costs. The City of Saint John will contribute $1.75 million.
Canada and New Brunswick are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that help communities improve their infrastructure. Both governments have agreed to work together to ensure that these funds are delivered quickly and efficiently so that construction can begin as soon as possible.
In New Brunswick, some 59 projects, totalling a federal investment of close to $91 million, have been announced since the launch of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.
